Lexington County's football season is well underway as teams prepare for their home season.
The county's boys and girls teams are suspended until after spring break. Upon his return, he will have three weeks of games left to improve his resume for the playoffs.
Last week, five teams finished at the top of the regional standings, with the remaining teams still close behind with a chance to win it all.
Chapin's boys and girls teams both sit atop the 5A Region 4 standings at 3-0 and 4-0.
The girls team had two regional wins, defeating River Bluff and White Knoll, and added a non-regional win against AC Flora. The team won these games by a combined score of 8-2.
The team defeated AC Flora 3-2 with two goals from Laila Bowers. Claire Wenger scored Chapin's other goal, her third of the year.
The Eagles defeated White Knoll 4-0 and then defeated River Bluff 1-0. Natalia Todaro scored the only goal of the game with a deep shot that sailed over the Gators' goalie.
The Chapin boys had a great performance in the first week of regional play, winning three contests against Lexington, White Knoll and River Bluff.
The Eagles defeated Chapin and White Knoll a combined 5-0 and faced River Bluff in a rematch of the Capital City Cup championship game. Chapin said in that game he lost 2-1, but this time things turned in the Eagles' favor.
Chapin overturned the score for the Gators, winning 2-1 and dropping River Bluff to second place in the standings.
The River Bluff Boys only lost to Chapin, but their regional record was tarnished, leaving them in second place. The Gators defeated Dutch Fork earlier in the week and suffered their first loss of the year to the Silver Foxes. JJ Barnes led the team with two goals.
Lexington finished second on the girls team, and the team's only district loss was a 1-0 loss to Chapin. The Wildcats have a chance to tie the score in a game on April 9th after spring break.
In the lower classification, the Swansea men's team, Batesburg-Leedsville men's team, and both Gray teams also rank at the top of their respective regions. The War Eagles have won all of their region games by forfeit and are playing individually scheduled games.
Swansea is ranked first in a region that includes Brookland-Cayce and Gilbert. These three teams have been at the top of their group all season, with little difference heading into the final week.
The Tigers lead with 5 wins and 1 loss, but Gilbert is 3 wins and 1 loss, with Swansea's only loss coming in extra time, 4-3, to Gilbert. Brookland-Casey beat Gilbert but is right behind them at 5-2 with losses to Swansea and No. 4 Dreher.
All three teams are scheduled to play against each other once again this season. Hopefully the final stretch will be as competitive as the start.
Batesburg-Leedsville is 5-1 in the region but has played twice as many games as any other team. The team will now wait to see if Strom Thurmond, the only team to beat the Panthers, will match that record before the playoffs.
Airport Girls, Gilbert Girls and Irmo Boys will not be in first place going into this week, but all three teams are still within reach of the championship in second place, with just one game left.
Victoria and Vanessa Coleman continue to light up the airport scoreboard. Senior Ella Herman served as her third member of one of the area's most explosive big threes.
The Eagles are 4-2, ranking second in the group behind South Aiken, which also has 4-2.
Gilbert is 4-1 and in second place behind undefeated Dreher. The Indians lost to the Blue Devils earlier this season, but will have a chance for revenge next week on April 12th.
Irmo has struggled against non-region teams, but the Yellow Jackets are 4-1 against conference opponents and improve to 7-8 overall. The team only lost to top-ranked AC Flora, but will be able to make up for it in the rematch on April 11th.
Other Lexington County teams still had successful seasons. Even if they aren't currently in the top two in their respective regions, some have a chance to get there.
For other players, it doesn't matter, and even if they're behind in the standings, they still have a chance to make the playoffs later in the season.
There will be very few football games in the state this week. This break will be a long break for the team to refocus and prepare for the final stage of the year.
