Former UFC fighter Brendan Schaub has an interesting theory as to why Conor McGregor hasn't been booked to return yet.
McGregor is rehabbing a broken foot and has been working out for quite some time to make a comeback. The Irishman has said he will return to action against Michael Chandler in June, but nothing has been officially announced so far. However, Schaub said that with the UFC suspending McGregor, he doesn't think he will be able to become a free agent and secure a boxing match on his own.
“There's more information to that story that we don't have,” Schaub said, via the Mirror. “But now International Fight Week begins, Conor didn't pull it out of his own head. It's going to be Michael Chandler…
I really think Conor just wants to do that one fight and then bounce back and make all his money fighting Manny Pacquiao, Jake Paul, and Nate Diaz in boxing or mixed martial arts in Dublin or somewhere. ” Schaub continued. “That's what's going on there and the UFC is doing what they do and trying to keep him a secret. So let's see what happens. Defending Dana He also said, “The reason we didn't announce the match is like he's promoting his own movie.”
“And he said, 'We need all your attention to promote the movie tour.' Once that's done, he'll go to a legal camp and the fight will be announced.” He's like, “We're just waiting for you guys to do their thing until this movie starts. Then we'll piggyback on it and you'll get the fight announcement.” It feels like it. So I think there will be a matchup announcement soon,” Schaub added.
This is an interesting theory as Conor McGregor is reportedly nearing the end of his contract with the UFC. However, it is unclear whether this is actually the case.
Dana White doesn't know when Conor McGregor will fight
Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler both said the fight would take place in June, but Dana White shot down that idea.
White says it's difficult for the Irishman to want to compete because McGregor is as wealthy as he is.
“The first problem was that he broke his shin bone. He was recovering from that. That was one of the reasons,” White said after UFC 298. “The other problem is that he's insanely rich.”
After all, many fans are expecting Conor McGregor to return this summer against Michael Chandler.
