One of the most notable additions is the proposed downtown venue for Big Air, which became an Olympic sport in 2018 and is currently competed in both skiing and snowboarding.
“Big Air literally brings sports to the people,” said Callum Clark, chief operating officer of the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation, which has overseen similar events at Civic Park in downtown Denver and Fenway Park in Boston. It was a great event,” he said. “Creating a great atmosphere in the heart of Salt Lake City will be an iconic event that will leave an indelible mark on the 2034 Winter Olympics.”
Park City Mountain will host men's and women's snowboard halfpipe, snowboard slopestyle, freestyle ski halfpipe and freestyle ski slopestyle competitions.
Deirdre Walsh, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Park City Mountain, expressed her excitement over the selection. “As a traditional Olympic venue and a long-time partner of U.S. Ski & Snowboard…we are committed to creating a unique and meaningful 'home games' experience for hundreds of U.S. athletes in 2034, and to athletes from around the world.” We look forward to welcoming you, promoting unity, and inspiring you. Developing youth through Olympic values. ”
For the 2002 Olympics, Park City Mountain hosted the men's and women's snowboard halfpipe, men's giant slalom, and men's and women's snowboard parallel giant slalom events at Eagle Race Arena. The mountain also made history by building a 22-foot halfpipe for the Olympics, following the debut of a smaller halfpipe event at the 1998 Nagano Games. Park City Mountain was built to accommodate 16,500 spectators per event, with temporary bleachers installed at the edge of the race area.
Salt Lake City, Utah, is the only preferred host site being considered by the International Olympic Committee for 2034. Elections are scheduled to take place at the 142nd IOC General Assembly in Paris this July.
