In Tuesday night's Little Hawkeye Conference opener, the Pella Christian girls soccer team, ranked No. 15 in Class 1A, scored two goals in the first half to beat Newton 4-1, but the Eagles boys The soccer team lost 2-1 at home to the Cardinals. 0.
The PC Girls scored early, as Claire Wynn Fogle found the back of the net in the 6th minute to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Newton scored to tie the game at 1-1. The score stood for just over 30 minutes, until Lexi Terpstra converted a penalty kick in the 39th minute, giving Pella Christian a 2-1 advantage at halftime. The Eagles came out of halftime and quickly extended their lead to 3-1 in the 44th minute when Caris Fickert found the back of the net off an assist from Terpstra. Pella Christian scored the final goal of the night in the 69th minute, with Chloe Snyder scoring her first national goal on an assist from Emma Zula.
The Eagle boys got off to a strong start at home against Newton, who played the first half in windy conditions. Pella Christian held the Cardinals in check for the first 12 minutes, but the Cardinals broke through the Eagle defense and scored in the 13th minute. The score was 1-0 in Newton's favor until the 29th minute, when the Cardinals found the back of the net from a corner kick. Pella Christian had an advantage in the second half in windy conditions, but could not capitalize and lost 2-0.
The Eagle girls improved to 3-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in conference play, while the boys fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. The Pella Christian soccer team will return to the field Thursday for a doubleheader at Eagle Lane, with the girls taking on Centerville at 5:30 p.m. and the boys taking on Clark at approximately 7:15 p.m.
