Ahead of the opening game, Trevor Peake discussed a number of things with Kel Now in an exclusive interview. This is the full discussion between us and Trevor Peake.
How excited are you to start the main card at UFC Fight Night?
“This is by far the most exciting team I've been to in any game in my entire career. I feel better than I've ever been, this is the best camp I've ever had, and I'm the healthiest I've ever been. I'm excited for this opportunity. Thank you very much.”
What made you start mixed martial arts? [MMA]?
“I was a wild kid, pretty main, just going around fighting a lot of people. I had a good friend when I was a teenager, and he loved the UFC. Every time there was a brawl, he He said to me, I think I was 15 years old, “If you want to make a lot of money, you can fight.''
It always stuck with me, but after a lot of gatherings, it was time for me to get to know Jesus Christ, and I started to really focus on MMA, training, etc. Jesus has blessed me with that. ”
You've said that MMA saved your life. Can you explain something about that?
“MMA has given me purpose, goals, dreams, etc., but at the end of the day, the uplifting of my soul that I am loved and saved is only because of Jesus. It's helped me get through a lot. I've been in so many bad situations and lived a rough lifestyle.
He set me on the path to success, gave me hope, helped me realize my dreams, and gave me vision and purpose. MMA has given me purpose and kept me disciplined, but at the end of the day, I owe everything that's going on in my life to Jesus Christ. ”
I saw you training Muay Thai with Bang in Colorado. Share your training experience with the best players.
“This was one of the greatest blessings I have ever received. In general, Dwayne Ludwig and his entire crew in Colorado have been a great addition to my training and overall I felt like I had known Dwayne my whole life, and I loved him to death.
I can't say enough how grateful I am to him and everything he's done for me over the past eight weeks. Training in Colorado was crazy, in the open highlands. It's very different from the northeastern corner of Alabama where I'm from. There are no elevations like this in Colorado. It was really crazy. As you know, the athletes I'm lucky enough to train with are some of the best in the world. I feel that it has improved significantly from its original state. ”
As soon as the fight with Campbell was announced, you posted on Twitter that it would be a standing hammer fist knockout. Why are you so confident?
“I'm confident in my abilities, I've tried everything, I've worked really, really hard in this camp. Nobody's going to get in there, nobody's going to get this job done. So I just worked hard, and I worked completely too hard for any other result.”
“There's a lot of force in your hands, and every punch you throw is loaded. How do you create that much force?”
It is truly a gift from God. I mean, even before I started training and learning body mechanics and techniques, I was throwing proper punches, and I was always throwing with power…I had the best swings, and It's one of the greatest gifts God has given me. You also know my past as far as the cage is concerned. A long time ago, when my father was talking about our strengths, he told me that while they are our greatest strengths, they are also sometimes our greatest weaknesses.
I feel like I've been in the Octagon so many times, knowing that I have this crazy power and stuff like that, trying to put pressure on someone's jaw, putting more power into a shot, giving it my all. Swing or do as much as you can where you don't have to punch others. So I've been really focusing on maintaining my technique a little more and landing my punches more accurately. ”
Who’s the guy you’re always excited to fight with?
“No matter who wins the title, I like to win that title. I always wanted to fight Justin Gaethje, just because of the level of respect. I always wanted to fight that guy. Not always, but I always feel like I relate to him very much because we both struggle to control our own powers. Controlling chaos is I always thought it was about getting the best out of him.
I just wanted to fight him with respect. But at our last camp in Colorado, we were lucky enough to practice with Trevor Wittman, who participates in the sport alongside the likes of Justin Gaethje. So if that fight happens, that would be great, but I have a lot of respect for all of them and they opened the door for me.
I'm not sure that's necessarily my dream match anymore just because they've been great for me the last few weeks. They made me feel really welcome and were really helpful. I have a lot of empathy for that guy. I like knocking out Paddy Pimblett…I think that would be pretty cool. ”
After your last match on Instagram, you asked who would be next. So I want to ask you, who's next?
“Whoever it is, it doesn't really matter to me. Someone who's going to be exciting, I just want an exciting fight. I want to get paid for a worthwhile fight. The best in the world to make more money. I want to fight against the best fighters in the world any day of the week, and I just want to get paid for the fight.''
Last year we played three games in a row, how is it going this year? How many games do you have in mind?
“I would like to get at least three. If I can have at least three fights in a year, I think it will be more fulfilling. This match in April is a match against this year's slightly lighter star that I especially want. , everything is booked until April. Who knows, if you go there and get the job done, you'll probably get a quick turnaround and be back there within just a month, 4 times a year ( We might be able to play, you never know.”
Trevor Peake talks about his last fight against Muhammad Yahya in Saudi Arabia
“I loved it, I loved the pressure, I didn't feel like I was under that much pressure. [Muhammad Yahya] The first Emirati fighter to step into the UFC Octagon. So I think there was a lot of pressure on him. I love this country, it's a beautiful place. Everyone there treated me like gold most of the time. It was pretty crazy.
I thought there were many people like me, but many of the lower class poor people over there are not Emiratis. I was like a champion of the poor. Everyone from the lower classes supported me. I've been a lower class person all my life, so I've been associated with them. They really sang for me there. A beautiful country, a beautiful experience and a wonderful time. ”
Who is your Mount Rushmore?
“Jon Jones, Chuck Liddell, Wanderlei Silva, and maybe Conor McGregor. He brought a lot of attention to the sport. I wasn't a fan of everything he did, but he captivated the world. And in terms of being able to draw attention to different places. Conor McGregor is an absolute star, and I don't think the world will ever see a better star.”
What are your goals for 2024?
“This is the last fight on my Contender Series contract. So my goal for 2024 is to get a contract and get paid a little bit better. Start doing a little bit of a side hustle and keep improving. , I want to keep moving toward my goals and more.”
A message from Trevor Peake to his fans
“Thank you everyone for loving me. Thank you for supporting me, believing in me, and making a little country boy feel like a superstar. I've been through so much in life. and although I don't deserve all the love and support you all give me, I really, really, really appreciate it with every fiber of my being. Also, what I want to say is , if you feel like struggling in life and don't have a purpose, a sense of loss, etc., I encourage you to try Jesus Christ. He may change your life.
I used to be an IV drug user and I did a lot of bad things and failed every day. But today, I have a Lord, a Savior, a friend, and a father. They walked through life for me, guided me, guided me, held my hand, and loved me. It means a lot to me. As long as I have his love, I don't think anything in the world can beat me. If you feel like no one loves you, Jesus loves you. I highly recommend trying to figure out who he is. ”
