Devin Haney isn't too worried about Ryan Garcia's newfound penchant for death threats heading into their April 20th match at DAZN PPV.
Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), the WBC light welterweight champion, was unfazed by Ryan's crude threats heading into their bout at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Desperate times call for desperate trash talk
Of course, Ryan's scary-sounding threat may have been a move to sell Barclays Center tickets. That's because there are still plenty of seats available for fans and it's important that the match sells out and brings in PPV buys.
A better approach for Ryan and Haney to get fans interested in their fight would be to do interviews and release more sparring footage and Devin's case, giving his father, Bill Haney, a boost in publicity. I guess I'll start with some trash talk. Devin needs to let Bill go and get the real promotion started, Oakland, California style.
He does all the talking for Devin, but he usually fumbles about saying the right thing and isn't filled with the charisma of his father. Bill was MIA for promotions and when he spoke he was talking about Gervonta Davis.
Haney mocks Garcia's 'murder' claim
“Ryan might try to kill me and get killed. Sometimes you want something too bad and it backfires. He might run into something he can't stand up to.” Devin Haney told FightHub TV, reacting to Ryan Garcia saying he was going to kill him during their April 20th DAZN PPV match.
It's amazing how these two fighters got stuck in the quagmire of using this approach to sell their fights. Are there other ways to raise awareness without talking about killing each other? Yes, boxing is a form of war, but it's sad to see Devin and Ryan talking about each other's X's.
“Yes, Ryan is very aggressive, overly anxious, and makes a lot of mistakes. We've been studying him. We see a lot of those mistakes. We wants to take advantage of those and thinks I will finish him if everything goes according to plan,” Haney said of believing he can knock out Ryan.
