There are only two spots available for Australian men to qualify for the Paris Games.
Sydney:
If Cameron Smith needs extra motivation to do well at the Masters later this month, his desperation for the Paris Olympics in August will provide it.
The 2022 British Open champion tied for 10th at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, but the world No. 62 has four other Australians in the world rankings, which gives him a second place going to Paris. The other players will be decided.
Smith's departure from the LIV Tour means he will not be able to earn ranking points in most events, so to play at Le Golf National starting August 1st, he will have to play at Augusta, the PGA Championship in May, and the PGA Championship in June. It is essential that he perform well at the US Open. Four.
“This is a place I would love to go to represent Australia,” the former world number two told reporters from Florida on Tuesday.
“I have to play well to get there, I know I have to play well, and I’ll probably only take three or four shots before they pick me. .I think it's more pressure.”
Smith has finished in the top five three times in seven visits to Augusta, and earning the famous green jacket is another major goal. “It's a really nice place…I really want to get it and it would be great if I could get it,” he added.
“I just had three weeks off, so I went out on the course and focused on shot shaping and flight control, which I think is really important to playing well there.”
The 30-year-old is getting used to spending more time playing, even though the much-touted merger of LIV and the US PGA Tour is still a long way off. Smith isn't complaining.
“The last few years I've probably been able to get an extra four or five weeks off each year and spend more time in Australia,” he said.
“I don't know if I'm willing to move away from my family or make any sacrifices like I did in the past.”
Ms Smith's team posted a photo of her with a shaved mullet on social media on Monday, but it turned out to be an April Fool's prank and the famous hairstyle will be released in Adelaide later this month. It is scheduled to be unveiled at the LIV event to be held at .
“It was probably the unanimous decision of the whole tour that that was the best event (of last year),” he said.
