El Paso, Texas (KTSM) – The regional quarterfinal round (Round 32) of the UIL Texas High School Soccer Playoffs began on Monday. A total of nine teams from the El Paso area qualified for the regional quarterfinal round and are looking to survive and advance to the regional semifinals.
Two of the local teams were in action Monday night.
San Elizario defeated Austin 5-0 in the Class 4A boys regional quarterfinals at Del Valle High School.
Max Sappenfield's San Elizario team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third year in a row. Last year, San Elizario's season ended in the Final Four with a 1-0 loss to Hidalgo in Georgetown, Texas. This year, the Eagles have a goal of returning to that stage and earning redemption.
“It’s really fun to play with them,” San Elizario sophomore defender Angel Salas said. “The only reason we keep winning is because we play for each other. Last year we made it to the Final Four, so this is a really big step for us and this year we achieved that and won the championship.” We aim to do so.”
San Elizario will play the winner of the Castleberry-Salado game in this weekend's Class 4A regional semifinals. The date is undecided.
Regional quarterfinal games continue on Tuesday, with several more local teams taking to the field.
