Noreen, 41, has been involved in U.S. Hockey for nearly a decade, serving as the head coach of the Tri-City Storm of the U.S. Hockey League since 2017.
“I am honored and humbled to serve as the next head hockey coach at the University of Miami,” Noreen said in the release. “I would like to thank David Saylor and (Associate AD) Brad Okell for believing in me and the alumni of this storied program for building something special. We look forward to establishing a standard that all of our supporters can be proud of.”
Noreen had a record of 236-126-24 at Tri-City, making him the winningest coach in franchise history. He led the Tri-Cities to the playoffs in all seven seasons (excluding the 2019-20 postseason, which was canceled due to the coronavirus). Noreen led the Storm to two Anderson Cups (2019 and 2022). He was named Coach of the Year in both seasons.
“I am pleased to introduce Anthony Noreen as the next head coach of the University of Miami hockey program. We are committed to building on that proud history,” Saylor said in the release.
Noreen replaces Chris Bergeron, who was fired last month after leading the Redhawks for five seasons. Miami's last winning season was 2014-2015.
Noreen has coached 34 NHL draft picks in his seven years with the Storm. The Tri-Cities has produced more than 100 Division I hockey players during that time. He won the 2022 Hrinka Gretzky Cup where he served as his U-18 coach for the USA team, and in 2018 he coached the USA Junior Selection Team to a gold medal at the World Junior A Challenge. .
Prior to Tri-City, he was the head coach of the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL after spending four seasons with Youngstown (USHL).
A Chicago native, Noreen began her coaching career as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He played four seasons for the Pointers and was a team captain during his junior and senior seasons.
Noreen will coach the Storm through the remainder of the USHL regular season and playoffs before officially taking over in Miami. He will be introduced at Oxford on Tuesday 9th April.
