INDIANAPOLIS — Virginia Tech finished ninth at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, which concluded Saturday night.
Tech tied last year's team for the program's best finish in NCAA history.
Arizona State scored a total of 523.5 points, winning the team title for the first time in the four-day tournament. California ranked second with 444.5 points. The total technical score was 172 points. Virginia finished 17th.
In the final event of the competition, the technical quartet of Youssef Ramadan, Brendan Whitfield, Luis Dominguez, and Carles Col Martí placed 6th with a school record time of 2:45.97, earning them a place on the All-American first team. won the honor.
The UVa quartet of Matt Brownstead, Connor Boyle, August Lamb and Tim Connelly placed 10th (2:47.63).

On Saturday, Christian Schaefer had 19 kills and led the visiting Knights (24-0, 8-0 Continental Volleyball Conference) to a 25-17, 20-25, 22-25 win over Rutgers vs. Newark. He led them to a 25-19, 15-11 victory (14-11, 3-5).
Roanoke wins twice
The Maroons won two games Saturday in Union, New Jersey, ending their second varsity season with a 16-13 record.
Roanoke went just 7-19 last year.
Jackson Rutkowski had 13 kills and Roanoke defeated league rival Keene 25-22, 25-22, 26-23. Roanoke finished 2-6 in Continental Volleyball Conference play.
Zayver Dixon had six kills and the Maroons defeated Penn State Schuylkill 25-8, 25-12, 25-9.
Tech company McClure breaks records
Connor McClure broke ACC and Virginia Tech records in the pole vault for the Texas Relays on Saturday.
McClure won the elite division with a vault of 18 feet, 10 1/4 inches, qualifying her for the U.S. Olympic Trials.
In the regular division, Maddox Hamm of the Institute of Technology won (18 wins, 2 draws, 1/4).
At the Florida Relays, the Tech quartet of Kennedy Harrison, KJ Tilmon, Ali Diaby and Judson Lincoln IV broke their own school record in the 4×400 relay with a third-place time of 3:01.62.
UVa's Appleton breaks the mark.
Margot Appleton of Virginia won the 5,000 meters for the Raleigh Relays, breaking UVa, meet and facility records in 15:18.21.
Jenny Schilling broke a 36-year-old UVa record with a fifth-place time of 32:44.19 in the 10,000 meters. Will Anthony won the boys 10,000 meters with a new school record time of 28:21.93.
Gary Martin topped the UVa mark in the 5,000 meters, posting a second-place time of 13:31.51.
Jacob Lemon won the discus (181-6).
Roanoke's Fowler breaks record
Roanoke College's Brady Fowler (Pulaski County) broke his own school record with a second-place time in the 100-meter dash at the Hornet Open in Lynchburg with a time of 10.37 seconds.
He won the 200 meters (20.95 seconds) and was part of the team that won the 4×100 relay with Aidan Spradlin, Elijah Borich and Bryson Hill (41.45 seconds). The Roanoke quartet of Hill, Borich, Lorenzo Camobreco and Cameron McDonald won the 4×400 (3:25.73).
Ferrum College's Antaveon Steele broke his school record in the 110 hurdles with a third-place time of 15.47 seconds.
On the girls' side, Caitlin Nguyen of Roanoke won the high jump (1.60 meters). The Roanoke quartet of Mikayla Hefferon, Maryrose Molina Schuman, Ophelia Ladner and Haley Gamble won the 4×400 relay (3:59.46).
Ashley D'Ambrosia placed second in the pole vault with a vault of 11-11-1/2, breaking Washington and Lee's records.
