Olympic athletes are different from you and me. After all, that's what it means to be an Olympian. Like it or not, the vividness of Olympic medals is one of the few ways sailing gets national attention. Still, it's a place that only gets attention for a short period of time. However, while in some countries the need to bring sailing to the public eye is more dependent on the Olympics than in many others, in a common quest for universal visibility and global acceptance, sailing The fact is that there is a heavy reliance on the Olympics in general. The Olympics are more Olympic than sailing.
Therefore, in creating “Olympic-friendly” classes, we are faced with the reality that, with the notable exception of ILCA/Lazers, being involved in the Olympics is not good for rowing classes. Since being left out of the Olympic squad, the International Dragons, and more recently the Olympic Finns, have continued to thrive in their own unique and entertaining ways. In contrast, the Olympic-aimed Nacra 17 catamaran, while a highly admirable ideal, falls somewhat short of the famous names in sailing, and ranks well above the average or even elite sailor's club dinghy.
