CARROLLTON — A little wind didn't slow down fast Maddie Patterson.
Flower Mound sophomore Marcus scored two goals in the first 40 minutes of a 3-0 (12-6-6) win over Richardson Pierce in the area round of the Class 6A girls soccer playoffs. Fellow sophomore Piper Garcia scored Marcus' third goal around the 59th minute of the game on a balmy Friday night at Standridge Stadium.

Patterson's strong footwork and ability to outrun defenders bodes well for Marcus (15-6-4), who also benefited from senior goalie Bry Russell's strong defense in the shutout.
Marcus finished fourth in District 6-6A this season, defeating Allen 2-0 in the bi-district round on Monday. The team aims to make another run at the state championship after winning the Class 6A crown in 2023.
Marcus lost just one game last season when it defeated Fort Bend Ridge Point 2-0 in the state title game to win its first state championship since 2005.
Patterson played a key role as a freshman as Marcus won the state title last year. The forward scored in the 94th minute of double overtime to help Marcus defeat Trophy Club Byron Nelson 1-0 in the 6A Region I semifinals and advance to the finals.
As of March 20, Patterson had scored 27 goals this season.
Alabama State's Russell has 10 shutouts in the same span. She and Patterson round out a talented roster that includes her junior Mary Hardin-Baylor commit Aubrey Tipton and senior Oklahoma commit Savannah Wiley.
These weapons will help Marcus continue its title defense in the district quarterfinals against Lake Highlands.

One was an assist from junior Ashlyn Steele and the other was a pass from sophomore Dani Chaump. Schompf scored his own goal Friday night, and his senior, Dennis Garcia, added an extra point. Champ and Garcia scored with assists from freshman Casey Corcoran.
Flower Mound's Jalen Chaney scored each of the team's two goals and Haley Peep had two assists. Lake Highlands, the district runner-up with a 7-6 record, will face Flower Mound Marcus in the district quarterfinals.
Forney 6, Mount Pleasant 0: Kylie Williams, Addison Smith and Delilah Rico combined for six goals in the win for Forney. Williams led Forney with three points, Smith had two points and Rico had one goal and an assist. Madalyn Putnam had a team-high three assists and goaltender Madison Mayhall earned the shutout.
Forney (23-2-1) is undefeated in District 14-5A and will play fellow district champions in Lovejoy in the next round.
Lovejoy 6, Lufkin 0: Emma Nelson had a great day Friday with Lovejoy's big win over Lufkin. The junior scored a team-high two goals and assisted on Ella York's one goal. Kenley Swadener, Gracyn Thompson and Brenna Wallace also scored in area round contests. Lovejoy (20-1-4) remained scoreless thanks to Swadener and Natalie Rennert. In two straight playoff games, Lovejoy outscored their opponents 16-0.
McKinney North 2, Kingwood Park 1: Cat Soto and Katie Keneally each scored a goal for McKinney North (14-5-2), which will face Red Oak (17-4) in the district quarterfinals.
Wylie East 8, Mansfield Lake Ridge 1: It was a great night for Wylie East (23-1), which had seven different players score in the rout of Mansfield-Lakeridge. Freshman Sophie Preston led Wylie East with two goals. Riley Wood, Brooke Shields, Amaya Dawkins, Ariana Dalcair, Averi Reisinger and Rory Ayers each had one score of their own. Wylie East will play Wylie in the district quarterfinals.
