In a move that has long been speculated as a possibility, Caitlin Clark has actually received an invitation from USA Basketball to attend its Olympic training camp in Cleveland from April 3-5.
Of course, this is in the middle of the women's NCAA Tournament. If everything goes according to plan for top-seeded Iowa (31-4 Big Ten, 15-3), the Hawkeyes will already be headed to Cleveland for the Final Four.
Clark is no stranger to American basketball. The 6-foot senior has won three gold medals with the U.S. Basketball Junior National Team, and she most recently won a gold medal with the 2021 U.S. Women's U19 National Team.
Nine former Olympians will be participating in the Cleveland camp. The group features five-time gold medalist Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury. Mercury's Brittney Greiner. Ariel Atkins of the Washington Mystics. Las Vegas Aces Chelsea Gray, Aja Wilson, Kelsey Plumb, Jackie Young. Jewel Lloyd of the Seattle Storm. Brianna Stewart of New York Liberty.
The past two No. 1 overall picks, Aliyah Boston of the Indiana Fever and Lime Howard of the Atlanta Dream, are also among those who each earned invitations to Olympic camp.
Dates for the U.S. Women's Olympic 5-on-5 and 3×3 teams for the Paris Games, which will be held from July 26 to Aug. 11, have not been announced. The Americans won their first 3×3 Olympic Games at the 2021 Tokyo Games, winning the 5-on-5 gold medal for the eighth year in a row.
