The Florida State Seminoles will hold their first scrimmage of the spring on Thursday, March 28th after four practices. The Noles are competing for spots on the depth chart, and many rookies will be stepping into Doak Campbell Stadium for the first time under lights.
With a mixed roster of veterans, transfers and freshmen, the coaching staff will be keeping an eye on the team's chemistry two weeks into spring training. Head coach Mike Norvell met with the media after Tuesday's practice to discuss the upcoming scrimmage and detail the workload he plans for his team.
“There's going to be some players that are going to be there, but it's probably going to be a calculation of what we need to look at and what that's going to be. There's also the calculation that needs to be made, 'Do we have to get this player this many times?' There's going to be some 'just so we can see how everything goes,''' Norvell said after Tuesday's practice.
A total of 13 freshmen and 15 transfers joined the Seminoles this spring. Norvell emphasized the influx of new players, especially freshmen, and emphasized the importance of their debuts inside Doak Campbell Stadium.
“We do have a lot of new faces, but a lot of them are incoming freshmen,” Norvell continued. “This is the first time they’ve been in action at Doak Campbell, so I’m interested to see how they react.”
The first scrimmage of the spring will give us a glimpse of the finished product that will be played against Georgia Tech on August 24th in Dublin, Ireland. The team evolves throughout the season, but Norvell said he doesn't expect a polished example from Thursday. He wants to see communication between players and see them play to the best of their ability.
“I just want to see guys go out there and play. The players on the field, the different groups, it's just the communication element. We're going to have a mix of different people,” Norvell said. “I don't expect there to be that much cohesiveness in the various HR groups that I'm going to be working with, but that's part of it.The people who can go out and do their jobs are the ones who are the best at communicating. Check “What are their abilities?'' ”
