OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – In just one month, Olympic hopefuls will be battling it out in the water to earn a spot on Team USA for this summer's competition in Paris.
“It's very important that our athletes qualify for the Olympics,” said River Sports Executive Director Michael Knopp.
River Sports OKC will be hosting team trials for canoe/kayak slalom and kayak cross events at the end of April.
Knopf says you don't have to participate in a sport to participate in the event. As of this article's publication, River Sports was still 54 people short of its volunteer goal, he said.
“It's fun to feel like you're an important part of the Olympics,” Knopp said. “People here in Oklahoma City have a chance to embrace the fact that we have one of the world's first venues for this event.”
River Sports trains volunteers to manage time and act as gate judges. Two 2-4 hour training sessions.
“These are the people who sit by the gate and watch the athletes go through the slalom gate, making sure they don't miss the gate or hit the gate,” Knopp said.
No training is required for other hospitality volunteer positions. Must be 18 years or older.
