Sometimes the person on the street has more wisdom than the cultural elite. This is because cultural elites deal with abstract theory, while people on the street deal with everyday life. Nowhere is this more true than on the subject of men who identify as women participating in women's sports.
Once, when I was a visiting professor at an influential evangelical seminary, I spent time with a Korean-American pastor who had earned a doctorate in Buddhist studies. In his doctoral thesis, he analyzed various methods of evangelizing Buddhists and proposed the methods he believed to be most effective.
I asked him, really curious. “What success have you had using your method?”
He replied: I have yet to meet a Buddhist. ”
no kidding.
Academic theories that are not embodied in real-life experiences have limitations.
When academic theory didn't help Bud Light
Just ask Alyssa Heinerscheidt, Bud Light's vice president of marketing. He took time off after a massive and expensive boycott of the brand following Dylan Mulvaney's disastrous ad campaign.
As Amanda Holpch pointed out, New York Times:
Before the boycott, Alyssa Heinerscheidt said in an interview that brands need to be more inclusive.
“Brands are dying,” Heinerscheid said on the “Make Yourself at Home” podcast in March. “It's been in decline for a really long time. And if we can't get young drinkers to come and drink this brand, there's no future for Bud Light.”
This was said before a disastrous election campaign.
That's all Heinerscheid graduated from Wharton and Harvard knows about selling beer.
Hear from women who face off against male competitors
When it comes to men who identify as women competing against other women, Martina Navratilova, who is also a lesbian, said, “I don't like this kind of thing,'' after a male golfer who identifies as a woman won a tournament. This needs to end. Men's bodies don't belong in women's sports.”
What could be more clear?
Athletes can make far better decisions on such issues than “enlightened” bureaucrats sitting in ivory towers.
It's even worse when those responsible for making decisions about “trans women” competing with biological women don't even study the issue.
This came to light during a recent Senate investigation when Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) asked NCAA President Charlie Baker:
Senator Lee: Has the NCAA assessed the physical, emotional, and psychological harm of its transgender inclusion policy to female athletes? If so, what are the consequences? If not, why? Isn't that so?
press. Baker: The NCAA has not conducted any research related to its current transgender policy.
seriously? How could this happen, especially given the vast resources the NCAA has at their fingertips? Haven't they also studied the ramifications of their reckless policies?
Ask an MMA fighter
That is why, in cases like this, it is best to talk to the athletes themselves, to the people on the field, to the men (or women) on the streets in the world of sports.
Sometimes they present their strongest arguments, often in a straight-talking way, without worrying about being politically correct.
That's exactly what mixed martial artist Julian Erosa did after defeating his opponent last Saturday night. (For those not familiar with MMA, it is a very violent sport while requiring extraordinary athleticism, a diverse skill set, and a lot of courage.)
Elosa said:
I don't know how you guys feel about this whole situation, but I wanted to call Leah Thomas because I don't like scammers. [who was not a strong athlete as a male swimmer but became a record-setting champion when competing against women]. I wanted to encourage him to move from women's swimming to women's mixed martial arts. And I'm going to be a woman and beat that guy. That's what I meant. Because it's all about getting a little shock value.
However, in this world we live in, common sense no longer exists. It's getting a little bit ridiculous and obviously it's one of the big things happening right now.And I don't agree with men in women's sports, you even know Fallon Fox [a biological male who competed against women in MMA], guys fighting and knocking out women's MMA. It doesn't look good.
Thankfully, common sense resonates with many people when they hear the words, in Elosa's words, “There's no more common sense”, especially from the man (or woman) on the street.
Well said, Eloza. At some point, sanity will prevail.
