It's no exaggeration to say that less than a decade later, an Olympic gold medal has become as coveted a prize in men's golf as the Green Jacket or Claret Jug.
The third men's golf tournament of the modern Olympic era will be held at Le Golf National outside Paris from August 1 to 4, with 60 players from 32 countries competing for medals.
The United States has the most players in the field, with four players — world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele, 2023 U.S. Open winner Wyndham Clark and two-time major champion Collin Morikawa — all ranked in the top 15 of the Official World Golf Rankings. Every other country has one or two players.
In addition to Schauffele, Taiwan's CT Pan (bronze) will also return as a medal contender in Tokyo, with none of the 2016 Rio Olympic medalists (Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar) in the running.
Le Golf National will host the 2018 Ryder Cup and five Team Europe players from that tournament will compete in the Olympic Games: Tommy Fleetwood (Great Britain), Rory McIlroy (Ireland), Alex Noren (Sweden), Thorbjorn Olsen (Denmark) and Jon Rahm (Spain).
