WWE has had numerous relationships with the boxing world, particularly WrestleMania. Whether it's Floyd Mayweather or Mike Tyson, there's no denying that wrestling companies know the business of boxing.
Following the success of WrestleMania 40, let's explore past appearances on the show by boxing legends. Some have fought in matches, while others have served as referees in the main event. Here are some of boxers' most memorable matches on the “Show of Shows.”
1.) Muhammad Ali: WrestleMania 1
Believe it or not, Muhammad Ali was attending the first-ever WrestleMania. In fact, the special guest referee for the main event was “The Greatest.” It consisted of a tag team match between baby-faced Hulk Hogan and Mr. T (poor idiot!) vs. heels “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and “Mr. T.” Wonderful” Paul Orndorff.
The match ended with Ali delivering a knockout blow to Piper, helping Hogan and Mr. T win the match. The former heavyweight champion was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame earlier this year in recognition of his contributions to WWE.
2.) Mike Tyson: WrestleMania 14
Another special guest referee was none other than Mike Tyson. “Iron Mike” was scheduled to referee the main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels.
Tyson has had a dispute with Austin, getting into Austin's face and regularly taunting him. However, the former WBC heavyweight champion KO'd Michaels, giving Austin the victory. In addition, “Iron Mike'' was paid $3 million as an appearance fee for the event, which was a huge reward.
3.) Eric “Butterbean” Esch: WrestleMania 15
At the next WrestleMania event, Eric “Butterbean” Esch (77-10-4) faced Bart Gunn in a shoot fight. Esch ultimately knocked out Gunn in 34 seconds, showing off his boxing mettle.
However, this wasn't the first time “Butterbean” was involved with WWE. He also won against Marc Melo. D Generation X: At your home It's safe to say that Esch is not only a well-known boxer, but also a seasoned professional wrestler.
4.) Floyd Mayweather Jr.: WrestleMania 24
Additionally, another boxer was involved in a one-on-one match on the “Show of Shows.” His name was Floyd Mayweather and he challenged Big Show. At 39-0 at the time, people were looking to see if the diminutive Mayweather could defeat the 7-foot Big Show.
The former champion took down the giant and landed some solid punches for the victory. Additionally, Mayweather earned a $20 million paycheck for appearing in one WrestleMania match.
