Tonight, as the first relay athletes of the meet are being honored, it is time to reintroduce the term “doubles.” When we use this term, we are referring to athletes who have qualified in more than one event, thus earning two roster spots. For the purposes of this article, if an athlete has qualified in three events, that will be considered two doubles. We will be tracking “doubles” to determine when that athlete's next priority can be officially added to the team.
The competitors for both events in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay were decided today. Katie Ledecky Leading a group and joined by fellow Olympians Paige Madden And newcomers Claire Weinstein and Erin GemmellWeinstein finished second in the 200 freestyle, but is likely to be the top contender for inclusion in the race as Ledecky has previously indicated she would like to withdraw from the race and has done so in 2022 and 2023. As detailed below, unlike in past years, if Ledecky withdraws from the race, the athlete who placed seventh in the race will not be invited to join the team (if there is space available).
On the male side, Luke Hobson and Chris Juliano The Olympic debutant will compete in the 200m freestyle individual event, with veteran relay runners also taking part. Drew Kibler and Kieran SmithHe had already been named to the 400-meter team.
Team USA adds another veteran to their American record-holder team Ryan Murphy and Lily King With their ticket to Paris now booked, the pair won strongly and will be a consistent presence both in their own event and in the medley relay. Emma Weyant Aiming to match or beat his silver medal in the 400m individual medley from the Tokyo Games, Katie Grimeswon the event and will compete in the 400m individual medley at an Olympic Games for the first time.
Magic numbers:
- Having six doubles, either men's or women's, means that all of the priority number two players (number two ranked players) of that gender can be added.
- Eight doubles for either men or women means that all three priority athletes of that gender (fifth in the 100/200 freestyle) can be added.
- The ten doubles for either men or women means that all four priority athletes of that gender (sixth in the 100/200 freestyle) can add on.
The doubles so far are as follows:
