The news that '24 wing Dylan Thompson has committed to Georgia Tech made headlines on Twitter on Wednesday. Thompson is the son of former nine-time WNBA All-Star Tina Thompson. Becoming the fifth recruit to commit to coach Damon Stoudemire should help the Yellow Jackets, who have been ranked in the top 30 recruiting classes thus far, move up a bit in the rankings. Overtime Elite prospects Jaden Mustaph and Darrion Sutton are the top two prospects in the 2024 class.
During his senior year at Second Baptist University in Houston, Texas, Thompson averaged 18 points and seven rebounds per game, leading the team.
Thompson's height is the first thing that impresses about the senior freshman, but an intangible attribute Tech fans should be happy about is his history playing for John Lucas' Nike EYBL team, JL3. The EYBL circuit has long been the pinnacle of AAU basketball, and playing in the league is the closest thing to playing college basketball.
Analyzing tape of Houston players, Dylan likes to play with energy on both ends, but what stood out to me was his willingness to go for the rebound. They say points are scored on offense, games are scored on defense, and championships are scored on rebounds, and as a freshman, I expect he will develop those two traits sooner rather than later early in his college career. His offensive ability can't be ignored either. Thompson's offensive ability is improving. As a slender, athletic wing, his ball handling will continue to improve. With his size and height, he's got the talent to go wherever he chooses. His jump shot is consistent and smooth, making 35% of his 175 three-point attempts in his senior season.
With the blessing of a mother who has played and been successful at the highest level of women's sports, Dylan has a lot of resources to draw on, and it will be interesting to see how he develops alongside Coach Stoudemire and his peers.
