The Summer Olympics will no longer ban athletes from having private relationships, bypassing a 2020 rule brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.
Olympic Village director Laurent Michaud told Sky News on Tuesday that as many as 300,000 condoms will be stocked at athletes' accommodation in Paris.
“It’s really important that the convivial atmosphere here is big,” he said. “Working with the athlete committee, we wanted to create some spaces where our athletes felt very engaged and comfortable.”
The 2024 Games in the City of Love are set to live up to the host city's nickname. Providing condoms at the Olympics has been a tradition since the 1988 Seoul Olympics in an effort to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, according to CBS Sports.
Accommodations also include great French cuisine, but not the famous Champagne.
“Of course we don't have champagne in this village, but you can get as much champagne as you want in Paris,” says Michaud.
“There will be a buffet spanning more than 350 meters with cuisine from all over the world…and I think the players will really enjoy the French specialties prepared here.
The French government plans to deploy as many as 15,000 soldiers around Paris to ensure the safety of athletes, tourists and Parisians, and carry out a large-scale security operation in the run-up to the Games.
The tournament's opening ceremony on the Seine is scheduled for sunset on July 26, but viewing will be by invitation only due to safety concerns.
Organizers say the ceremony will be an “unprecedented experience that harnesses the natural light of the setting sun, with all its nuances, to illuminate the riverside promenade of the world's best athletes along the Seine in the heart of the capital.” He said he would provide it.
