Champions Park at Paris 2024 is the first venue of its kind to offer athletes the opportunity to celebrate with fans. As an exception to the current Olympic medal redistribution principles and ceremony options, the IOC AC recommended that this be made an additional venue option for redistribution ceremonies at this summer's Olympic Games.
According to the redistribution principle, athletes can choose one of the following options for the redistribution ceremony:
- Next Olympic Games (for reallocation after PyeongChang 2018)
- Youth Olympic Games
- IOC Headquarters or Olympic Museum
- Functions of the National Olympic Committee
- League of Nations events or functions
- private ceremony
“It was very important for us to take into account the feedback we received at the International Athletes Forum held in October 2023. We then discussed this feedback from athletes with the AC of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee '' said Chairman Emma Terho. IOC AC.
“With very strong support from our colleagues at Paris 2024 AC, we are extending the opportunity for athletes to receive reallocated Olympic medals by adding the option of Champions Park at Paris 2024 as an exception. “We have decided to recommend that we increase the number of athletes, put the athlete's voice at the center of decision-making, and have the IOC EB support our recommendations,” Terho continued.
The option to receive reallocated Olympic medals at Champions Park is available to athletes who have already received approval for reallocation from the IOC EB before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, but have not yet held an award ceremony.
Redistribution of Olympic medals is not automatic and is decided on a case-by-case basis by the IOC. If the IOC decides to reallocate Olympic medals, this will only occur after the sanctioned athletes or teams have exhausted all remedies and all procedures have been completed.
