Hugh Freeze had some ups and downs in his debut season at Auburn, including a poor passing offense that was the worst in the SEC and the second-worst scoring offense in the league. In the end, the match culminated in a score of 6-7. They lost to New Mexico State by 21 points.
Here's how you can watch and what to watch as Auburn returns to the football field this weekend to wrap up spring practice for its annual A-Day preseason scrimmage.
Auburn Football Spring Game 2024 Schedule
when: Saturday, April 6th
time: 1pm Central
tv set: SEC Network+
Peyton Thorne and QB Depth
Coach Hugh Freeze acknowledged Thorne is Auburn's starting quarterback, but there is definitely room for improvement. He played in more than three-quarters of the offensive line, started all but one game, and passed for 1,755 yards, averaging 6.6 yards per throw last season.
Who's behind him on the depth chart? Robbie Ashford transferred to South Carolina, leaving Walker White, Hank Brown, and Holden Garnier as QB2 options. None of them have career TD passes, and if Thorne doesn't take a significant step forward, Auburn could look into the portal again.
wide receiver watch
Freeze made the receiver position key to his recruiting process, and Auburn signed four players in 2024, including two who rank among the nation's top 15 WRs: No. 12 wideout Perry Thompson; 5-star Cam Coleman is the No. 4 overall prospect at this position, based on consensus national recruiting rankings.
Auburn needs a downfield target that Thorn can help with. Bryce Cain is the No. 26 ranked receiver in the 2024 class and Georgia State transfer Robert Lewis caught six touchdown passes a year ago, averaging more than 17 yards per grab. Was.
secondary audition
At least on paper, much of Auburn's back seven appears to be in place. At cornerback, Keionte Scott and Cain Lee look ready to go. At safety, it's Jaelyn Thompson and Caleb Wood. Champion Anthony is ready to take on the slot role.
But keep an eye on the secondary backup. Colton Hood is the favorite for the corner three position, with Alabama transfer Antonio Kite joining J.C. Hart, Tyler Scott and Terrence Love.
