Garden City Wings Varsity Ice Hockey continued their winning streak last season, winning the High School Hockey League's Conference II Championship and qualifying for the postseason. The team started the season with nine straight wins, went undefeated in 10 games, and ultimately finished the season with a record of 13 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie and 1 overtime loss, defeating rival Manhasset to win the conference championship. Although the Wings lost in the playoffs, the boys' overall effort made this season a huge success.
The team was anchored by three-year varsity seniors Alex Bedard (C), Bobby Seaman (C), TJ Salvato (C), Michael Power and PJ Tursi. Underclassmen Liam Moon, Michael Karcher, Brett McQuade (A), Carter Pickens and Will Raia also contributed invaluably this season, along with freshmen Thomas Bacich, TJ Moody and Jack Vessio. Rounding out the team were three pool players Jeremi Dziedzic, David Backus and Luke Padula. The seniors built on the success of the past two years and never let up, winning their first conference championship in over 15 years.
This season, each player made their presence felt on the ice and on the bench, contributing and supporting the team every game and shift. Some players were especially notable for their exceptional accomplishments. First,
The league named Bobby Seaman and PJ Tarsi as Conference I Player of the Year and Conference I Goaltender of the Year, respectively. Bobby led the entire Varsity League (Conference I and II) in goals and total points. PJ was selected (again) as one of the league all-stars by the opposing team's coaches, and was honored as the only goaltender to play in the league, score a goal and receive an assist as a player.
In addition to the league awards, there were also team awards to recognize players' outstanding efforts and achievements. This year Alex Bedard and PJ Tarsi received the Peter C. Gall MVP Award as co-MVPs. Alex led the entire Varsity League (Conference I and II) in assists and PPG (3.42) and was second in total points. In addition to his league awards, Bobby Seaman was named Wings Offensive Player of the Year for leading the league in goals and total points, and being third in the Varsity League in assists and PPG (3.12).
TJ Salvato was awarded the Coaches Award for his production throughout the season. TJ is a true two-way player who can contribute whenever needed on both sides of the ice, totaling 16 points. Jack Veccio was named Rookie of the Year for his strong play. The team recognized Tomas Basic for his fourth-place finish as a freshman.Number The Wings were recognized for their efforts this season, including tying them with TJ Salvato for the lead in total points scored this season, and for the performances of senior Michael Power, whose season was cut short by a midseason injury but returned to the bench in time for the postseason. Additionally, in February, the Wings had three players who appeared in the league All-Star Game: Alex Bedard, Bobby Seaman and PJ Tarsi.
The Wings wish seniors Alex Bedard, Michael Power, TJ Salvato, Bobby Seaman, PJ Tarsi, David Backus and Jeremy Dziedzic the best of luck in the future.
The Wings plan to field three teams next year: Middle School, Junior Varsity and Varsity. Interested players should email gardencitywings@gmail.com and follow the team on Instagram (GCWings).
